United Kingdom official prison population tops 85,000
For the first time in its history the United Kingdom's official prison population has topped 85,000. Figures released by the government* reveal that 85,068 people are currently in British Prisons.
Radical Alternatives to Prison (RAP)** are calling on Tony Blair's government to call a halt on prison building and the policy of imprisoning more and more of our fellow citizens.
John Moore RAP's spokesman said "Prison is about pain and humiliation, it does nothing for victims or law breakers. By imprisoning in abusive conditions over 1,000 children a month Tony Blair's government is creating more crime in the future. Figures show 9 out of 10 children leaving British Prisons goes on to commit further crimes within a year."
Prison numbers have grown significantly since New Labour came to power in 1997 despite official figures indicating falling levels of crime. Most of those imprisoned are for non-violent offences. Many are mentally ill. The number of children and women has increased far quicker than the overall population. The number of Black and Asian prisoners, who have to suffer racist regimes has increased the most.
Deaths in prison are at all time records. These deaths include Gareth Myatt, a 15 year old boy killed by Prison Officers last year whilst being restrained at Rainsbrook Child Prison and Adam Rickwood, a 14 year old boy who was found hanged at Hassockfield Child Prison, the youngest person to ever die in custody. In HMP Holloway Prison Officers are cutting down up to 5 women hanging from ligatures in the cells every night.
RAP is therefore calling on Tony Blair and his Government to stop the madness of imprisoning more and more people and instead look towards more constructive responses designed to meet the needs of both victims and lawbreakers. As an immediate step RAP is calling on the government to stop imprisoning children. In addition we are calling for an immediate halt to prison building.
